Trail Description
The San Rafael Swell is actually a large area of BLM land that stretches for miles. It's estimated that the swell is over 30 miles long and 50 miles wide. There are numerous places to visit and things to see including old mines, incredible canyons, dinosaur tracks, petroglyphs, and others. The pictures you see are only one of many areas that we visited. ATVTrailReviews knows there are many more trails to be found in the San Rafael swell.
There are literally hundreds of different roads and routes to explore in the San Rafael Swell. Some of the more popular areas include Buckhorn Wash, Devils Racetrack, Old Woman Wash, Iron Wash, Ernie Canyon, Trin-Alcove Bend, June’s Bottom, and others. I-70 actually divides the "swell" in half. There are graded roads that lead to Reds Canyon, Temple Mountain and Hidden Splendor in the Southern half. In the Northern half there are graded roads that lead to Buckhorn Wash, Little Grand Canyon and Mexican Mountain.
ATV riding in the swell ranges from easy to difficult depending on where you travel. There are a few washes and mountain trails that challenge the best riders. There are also well traveled dirt roads that are fun for the family. To get to the San Rafael Swell from Green River, take I-70 headed west. You don't have to travel very far before I-70 begins taking you right through the middle of the swell. There are several exits that you can take and ride either north or south of the freeway. Exit 129 and exit 131 are both popular exits to ride. Devil's Racetrack ATV trail is off of exit 131 with the trail head located at (38°52'43.95"N 110°47'43.45"W).
