Penrose Commons is known for its rocky terrain, mostly broken shale with very sharp edges, so a set of good rock tires is recommended. Its hot and its dusty so you want to make sure you bring plenty of water. The majority of the trails are fairly easy for a utility 4x4 ATV with good ground clearance. Because of the hot and dusty nature of the area, you may see a rattlesnake or two. Out of the approximately fifteen miles of trails there is a half mile section that is an extreme 4x4 trail. This half mile trail system is made up of three connecting trails called Liberty, Patriot, and
Independence. There is one more trail used as an escape route from the Independence trail call the Freedom trail. The half mile extreme trails are a deep gorge and will on the average take an utility 4x4 ATV about 3– 4 hours to complete. An ATV winch is required and several spotters are recommended. Trail damage
to your ATV is very possible. You will want to walk this trail system first to determine your best route.Once you start on this trail system you are committed and other than the Freedom trail there is no escape route and no turning around. Penrose Commons offer a good days worth of riding and it's always entertaining to watch the other ATVs and 4x4 rock crawlers try to conquer the extreme trails.
