Trail Description

We parked and unloaded at the parking/camping lot off the Chute canyon road. This is an Emery county maintained road that makes for a very smooth road. The road also gives access to Wild Horse, Chute, and Crack Canyons. These canyons all go through the San Rafael reef and end as slot canyons, very beautiful. At Chute Canyon the trail turns into the "Behind the Reef" trail. This is rated "most difficult" by the State Parks and Recreation. This trail has steep inclines and declines, very narrow paths, and extreme heights. This is a very entertaining trail, not overly technical, but be ready for the adrenaline. This part of the trail is a little over 10 miles long. Prepare to stop often to take pictures and side hikes into the slot canyons. Little wild horse is a major draw. You will exit the trail at Cistern canyon. Take the 23 mile loop over The Big Ridge through McKay Flats. Stop and take pictures of Family Butte then back down to the starting point.
