Trail Description
The Amasa Back or Cliffhanger trail starts about 6 miles west of McDonalds in Moab, stay to the left at the first fork in the road in town. You will head out past the Pritchett Canyon Trail on Kane Creek Road. Most people will park in the big parking lot on the right hand side of the road just after the road turns to dirt. From there, it only takes a couple of minutes traveling up Kane Creek Road before you see the trail head on the right. Look for the trail sign that says Cliffhanger.
This trail has a number of obstacles that will require assistance to get over and takes no time getting into it. There is steep rock ledge decent just yards away from the trail head sign. This trail requires a 4x4 machine, rope, and lockers help. It also is a must to ride this trail with a group. Cliffhanger is definitely one of most difficult ATV trails in Moab.
From the trail head as you turn off of Kane Creek Road, it is about 4.4 miles to the top of this trail. This trail is used by mountain bike riders so be courteous as you encounter bikes.
As you ascend up this trail you will be rewarded with some great views. Around the 2.2 mile mark the trail will fork. The right side road will take you to an overlook of the Poison Spider Mesa trail across the river. The left side road takes you down a big ledge along the side of a 400 ft. cliff (hence the nickname of the trail “Cliff Hanger”. After you get across the cliff section of this trail the riding gets easier and you will be able to make good time.
Around the 3.5 mile mark you will turn right over a big ledge and from there its slick rock to the top of the trail with great views.
