Trail Description
Mt. Antero is one of Colorado's 58 14ers and measures in at 14,269 feet high and is one of three 14ers in the “Indian group” of the southern Sawatch Range (along with Mt. Shavano and Tabeguache Peak). Mt. Antero was named for the peace-keeping chief of the Utah-based Uintah band of Utes. The mountain is also known for its aquamarine and quartz which are still mined today on active claims.
The trail to the top is narrow, steep and rocky in some spots, has a couple of water crossings and some switchbacks that zig-zags up the mountain with some steep drop-offs on the downhill side. As can be expected the views on the ride up are awesome with the view from the summit being absolutely breath-taking.
The trail only takes you to a parking area at about 13,700', the remaining 569' is made by foot for about a half a mile but is well worth it. There's something about seeing Colorado from above 14,000 feet.
This is a very popular spot and the trail can get pretty crowded with hikers, SUV's and ATVs. So plan on hitting the trail early or during the week.
On your way back down take the side trail south along Baldwin Creek to Baldwin Lake for some fishing and relaxing before heading back to Alpine. If time permits you can head west from Alpine over to the ghost town of St. Elmo for some site seeing.
