Trail Description
Camp Hale was established in 1942 in west-central Colorado to provide winter and mountain warfare training during World War II (WWII). By July 1965, Camp Hale was deactivated and control of the lands returned to the Forest Service in 1966. Now Camp Hale is known for its OHV trails and offers some great ATV camping opportunities in the back country.
One of the most popular rides of the area is the loop from McAllister Gulch to the Wearyman jeep road over Ptarmigan Pass to Resolution Creek Road back to Camp Hale. This is a scenic 15 - 20 mile ride that takes you from thick forest to above the timberline and has some steep challenging spots but nothing too difficult. This is a good days ride.
There are several side spurs (trails) that offer additional riding and lead to some remote back country primitive camping spots. If you plan on riding the side spurs that loop around, plan your trip in advance, is very easy to get confused. Plan on spending a couple of days camping in this area, exploring the trails and enjoying the views.
The temperature drops considerably overnight so dress accordingly, it is not unusual to find snow on Ptarmigan Pass and Resolution Mountain during the summer months. Many of the side spur trails have several stream crossings and depending on the previous winters snowfall these streams can really get flowing making some of the crossings a challenge.
The side spur that takes you to the top of Resolution Mountain offers some nice views. Camp Hale is a favorite riding destination due to its diverse scenic trail system and its uncrowded, remote location. It is perfect for a weekend ATV camping trip in the back country.
