How to Prepare Your ATV For Trail Riding after Winter Part 2 of 4 Submitted by admin on Sat, 04/18/2009 - 16:35

This is part 2 of a 4 part series on how to prepare your ATV to ride ATV trails this spring:

(1) – What do your tires look like?

If your ATV sat outside uncovered all winter, your tires sustained more wear and tear than they would have if they had been stored inside or if they had been covered. After sitting all winter your tires are probably low, fill them up and thoroughly review their condition. Make sure that you fill your tires to PSI recommended by the manufacturer. We have seen first hand how an over-inflated tire led to a blow out that caused a machine to roll at high speeds on a gravel road, and how under-inflated tires led to a 2 inch gash in the sidewall when the wheel hit a rock 17 miles from the truck.

You should check your tires for:

Like most ATV riders you are probably ready for the snow to melt so you can get out and hit the trails this spring, but is your machine ready?

There are 5 areas that I will discuss in a 4 part series that will help ATV riders get their machines ready for spring, (1) Fluid Levels (2) Battery Condition (3) Tire Condition (4) Carburetor Condition (5) Safety Check

(1) Fluids: Oil and Coolant: Check your owners manual or with the service department at your local ATV dealer to see how often you should change your oil. Changing your oil is not a difficult process, but you will need the following tools/accessories:

(a) oil filter wrench;

(b) crescent wrench or the appropriate sized wrench to remove the oil plug

(c) a drain pan.

MUD, MUD, MUD Submitted by admin on Sun, 04/12/2009 - 13:06

Last weekend we headed back down to Moab for our second ATV trip of the year. Three words describe the trip:

MUD, MUD, MUD (and maybe SNOW)

We planned on riding the White Wash Sand Dunes and Ten Mile Wash on Friday, then Hey Joe Canyon and Seven Mile Rim on Saturday. The White Wash Sand Dunes require you to take about a ten mile dirt road outside of Green River before you get to the riding area. We quickly learned that having an enclosed trailer makes all the difference in the world. The picture below is of the trailer once we made it to the dunes.
