Trail Description
The Arapeen Trail System (also known as the Skyline Drive Trail System, the Pinchot Trail, the Patton Trail) is one of Utah's most popular atv destinations because of the location (only a couple of hours south of SLC), the terrain (mostly easy, but those that want to get more aggressive can definitely find their fun), the beauty, the camping and fishing, the wildlife, and many more reasons. The Arapeen trail is located in central Utah in the Manti-La Sal National Forrest. The backbone of the trail system is the scenic Skyline Drive. Skyline Drive is known as one of the highest elevation roads in the nation and winds along the Wasatch Plateau for close to 90 miles. The Arapeen Trail System branches off of Skyline Drive and contains more than 350 miles of ATV trails.
There are plenty of way to access the trail system from all different directions and there are ample places to park for your ride. Access from the western side of the trail system occurs from most of the main cities along US Highway 89. Popular access points include Spring City Canyon, Manti Canyon, Fairview Canyon, and Twelve Mile Canyon east of Mayfield. Access from the eastern side occurs from Castle Dale and Ferron located along Utah Highway 10. Because there are so many access points and areas to ride, we recommend trying it from several different locations and deciding which location suits you best.
The Arapeen Trail System is composed of mostly easy to moderate trails that are perfect for teaching young family members the basics of ATV riding. There are miles of trails that are limited to ATV use only and don't allow vehicles over 52" in width. Most trails can be accessed from the end of May to late October depending on the snow.
Several of the more popular rides in the Arapeen Trail include Potter's Ponds (34 Miles), Fred's Flat (16 Miles), Patton Trail Loop (23 Miles), Palisades Loop (40 Miles), Beaver Creek Loop (33 Miles), and Log Maple Canyon (25 Miles).
One of the best resources to locate additional information on the Arapeen ATV trail is the Sanpete County Website at www.sanpete.com.
This is one of the best trails in the state to spend a weekend camping, exploring, fishing, and enjoying time with the family. With hundreds of miles of trails, it will take multiple visits to see all that this trail system has to offer. Keep your eyes open for deer and elk.

This area is an absolute blast to spend several days riding ATV's, camping, fishing, and sightseeing. The ATV trails are perfect for family rides and those that are looking for some challenging obstacles can certainly find them. We usually hang out on more of the North end of the trail system towards Gooseberry Reservoir. By the time the snow melts, there's usually only a small window to really get out and enjoy this area so make sure to plan ahead. For anyone that's in to fishing, the lakes and small streams in the area are an absolute blast to catch fish it. This is also one of the best areas in the state to spot elk and hear them bugle in the fall.
I have a friend with a cabin in this area and every summer we have a blast riding this trail system. I don't think people realize how much riding is out there. It seems like there are trails and roads that go everywhere. If you like to fish, I highly recommend taking a pole or rod along with you and hitting some of the small streams and lakes in the area (just remember that its not open to fishing year round and opens in the summer).
This is a great area for fishing. Make sure to take your fishing pole on your ATV and hit some of the smaller streams and lakes in the area...you'll be amazed what you can catch.
So many trails, so few vacation days to get there. Our group has ridden this area many times. We have had friends come join us from all over the country. It is such a beautiful area to ride. Be prepared for snow packs and lots of elevation changes.
I would recommend this place to all that ask me for riding areas.
