Trail Description

The Uncompahgre Plateau is a vast, amazing and unique landscape with many deep canyons separated by relatively flat mesas that generally run perpendicular to the summit ridge. The trails offer challenges for every type of rider from the flat open trails on top of the mesas to the trails that drop down into the many canyons and then back up to another mesa.

The terrains changes often from the thick pine forests in the higher elevations to the red rock deserts in the lower elevations with small lakes and streams throughout the area. This is a remote, secluded area and extra gas and water is recommended. There are opportunities for remote back country ATV camping everywhere.

The summers get hot here and the trails can get very dusty, but with the several small lakes and streams you will always find a place to wash off the trail dirt and take a quick dip. The intermediate trails going through some of the deep canyons are clearly marked for the novice riders. There are many ATV/Motorcycle trails and some jeep trails also.

Because of the remoteness of this area there is plenty of wildlife, mainly mule deer and elk, but bear and mountain lions have been seen in the area. This makes the Uncompahgre Plateau one of the most popular hunting areas in North America.
Unless you are a hunter you will want to avoid this area during hunting season.

You will want to study the trail maps in advance but the nice thing about the area is most west bound trails will take you to the Divide Road and you can take the Divide Road back to the trailhead. The Uncompahgre Plateau is a great remote and secluded area with plenty of trails to keep you busy for several days of ATV camping.
